Statutory Responsibilities

- Conducting Public Enlightment Campaigns and Disemminating Vital Information on Environmental and Ecological Matters.
- Liasing with State Ministries, Departments of Local Government, Statutory Bodies and Research Agencies on Environmental Protection.
- Monitoring Sources of Toxic Pollution
- Provision of Forest Resources for Industrial and Domestic use.
- Management of Wildlife
- Inspection of Sawmills, Saw Mill Licenses
- Monitoring Patrol of Forestry and Roads/Highways
- Forest Conservation and Preservation
- Management of Parks and Gardens
- Development of Open Spaces including the City Roundabouts.
Environmental Health
The sub sector, from 2003 to date has recorded the underlisted achievements:
- Successful launching of the Clean and Green programme in August 2003 by His Excellency, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki with employment of over 2,000 operatives to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment. The Waste Management component of the programme is being handled by a consultant, Ola’Kleen Nigeria Limited. 28 routes are presently covered in the Ilorin metropolis. In addition, 8 Waste management consultants were engaged in the year 2004 to handle the 13 LGAs outside Ilorin metropolis.
- To ensure a sustainable implementation of the clean and green programme, the State Government procured 10 roll-on-roll-off tipper trucks in year 2003. This is in addition to annual provision of light environmental tools, reflective jackets and Uniform for use of operatives of the Waste Management Company in Kwara State.
- In the year 2004, the State Government under the distinguished administration of Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki constructed 10 Public toilets with motorized boreholes, to serve the people of Ilorin metropolis at an affordable fee.
- The State Government, in the year 2005 fabricated 45 new roll-on-roll-off-bins, and also purchased 2 Roll-roll trucks to enhance the performance of the waste management component of the Clean and Green Programme.
- In the year 2005, the construction of a modern mechanized landfill plant was awarded by the State Government with the ultimate objective of capturing methane gas and carbon credits for the local and international markets through the Waste-to-Energy (WTE) programme. This project is located in Gbagede near Amoyo. Presently, it is about 80% completion level, and would be completed in 2010.
- The present administration, in a bid to ensuring the sustenance of the clean programme, had between 2007 and 2009 rehabilitated over 100 nos Roll-roll bin procured in 2003 and 2005 by the State Government for the State Waste Management activities.
- In a similar vein, the present administration engaged in regular clearing and management of the final dumpsites and also clears illegal neighborhoods dumpsites discovered within the State Capital.
- In addition,the State Government, in 2008, procured 10 new Dyno and Tipper Trucks to replace the old ones whose performance had been epileptic. The new trucks have undoubtedly breath a new lease of live into Waste management programme, especially in the State Capital.
- In the year 2009, the State Government equally provided 1,500 waste bags for commercial vehicles in the State capital metropolis. The aim is to complement the achievement recorded under the Clean and Green programme. The bags are being sold to motorists under a revolving scheme with the potential of boosting the State’s Internally Generated Revenue drive.
Various Ecological Problems were addressed since year 2003 ranging from:
- Channelization and Road works at Banni Ogidi river course Phases I and II in the years 2005;
- Channelization of A division behind Okin Complex in the year 2006;
- Channelization of Flood erosin sports at Tanke,Ilorin;
- Repair of Adelodun Road Bridge in 2007;
- Construction of channel/road work at Oniwasi, Alore Ilorin in 2007;
- Channelization of Ejiba Street River course along Stadium road in 2008;
- Expansion and Desilting of Aderemi Adeleye/Sayomi Streets G.R.A, Ilorin.
The State Government is also in partnership with the Federal Government to channelize Asa River and its tributaries as a permanent measure to arrest the perennial flooding affecting residents in the areas living along its banks. Towards this end, the State Government carried out a bi-annual mop up exercise to get rid of all form of debris and vegetation along Asa River course to allow free flow of water along its course.
Forestry Services
Forestry as an Economic Sector of Government activity, has contributed immensely to the economic development of the State through the provision of forest resources for both industrial and domestic uses. The Sub sector, during the period 2003 to 2010, has witnessed the following Achievements:
- Over 300,000 seedlings of both tree crops and ornamentals were raised yearly in various Nurseries for sales, distribution to members of public and planting in the various plantations
- Forest Regeneration. From 2007-2009, about 150 hectares of Land (State-wide) were planted with various types of exotic species such as Teak, Mahogany and Gmelina aborea. The objective of the project is for the production of poles/timber, pulp and paper. In addition, it would aid watershed management, environmental protection such as wind and water erosion; pollution abatement and climate stabilization.
- The State Government in the year 2008 purchased 1 Toyota Hilux Van to support the activities of forest regeneration and sustenance in the State.
- In ensuring a sustainable green energy in the State, City landscaping project was awarded in year 2004. The project was supported with the provision of 5 nos Water Tankers in the year 2006 to enhance its sustainability.
- Similarly, in the year 2008, the State Government engaged a landscape firm to carry out the maintenance of the project which entails carrying out a comprehensive mop-up at deficient spots, trimming, weeding and watering of the plants. The maintenance activities are still on-going in the 12 designated routes the project covers.
- As a complement to City Beautification programme, the present administration has embarked on the rehabilitation of Agba Nursery AKA Flower Garden and some major roundabouts in the State Capital including the Ministry of Agric Roundabout, Jebba Road, Ilorin; Unity Roundabout and the Ministry of Works and Transport Roundabout. These are in addition to the Landscaping of the Metropolitan Square which is still under construction.
