 Achievements

The information sector has suffered the most profound neglect and misuse in the hands of previous administrations in the state. The major preoccupation of this administration was that of reversing the prolonged neglect of this sector and bringing about a new, effective and people – centred information order for the State. Quite a number of programmes and strategies were mapped out for the actualization of this objective.

Attitudinal reorientation and feedback programme

The existing information machinery is being used to aggressively address the issues of attitudinal reorientation of the people to enable them capture the essence of government, poverty, public enlightenment and for obtaining feedback vital for reappraisal of government programmes. State owned electronic and print media were effectively used for the reorientation programme.

Campaigns were mounted on the radio and the television through jingles, features, current affairs programmes on clean environment, Back to Land Cultism, Road maintenance, Primary Health Care delivery, Promotion of work ethics, Security consciousness, Accountability, Due process, Transparency and host of others. The state owned media houses are now used for promotion of virtues that enable people, instead of the self-centered, personalized jingles which hitherto dominated the air waves. The new reorientation has no doubt brought about changes in attitudes and perceptions of the people.

  Public information and enlightenment

There has been effective public enlightenment through regular production of press releases and publicity of government actions, holding of  interactive sessions with Kwarans both within the country and Kwarans in Diaspora in the form of peoples’ forum. There Inter State Visits of the Ministries of Information (Kwara, Niger, Ekiti and Osun States) have been facilitated to show case the delivery of the dividends of democracy to the people.

There is effective use of the State’s Media Outfits for the desired attitudinal changes aimed at unveiling the Investment potentials of Kwara State with a view to promoting Kwara State as appositive centre for development and an active site for private Investment. The Ministry maintains cordial relationship with the press through Media tour of the Executive Governor on periodic interactive sessions with media executives.

The Ministry facilitated the establishment of state council on information the first state council on information in Nigeria. The Ministry also engages in the Institutional Capacity building in all the state media outfits i.e. Radio Kwara, Kwara Television, The Herald and indeed, the Information Department.

Also the present administration has been able to upgrade the State’s owned Media Houses to Standard. Radio Kwara can now be heard loud and clear in almost all parts of the country.
