Responsibilities
Ministry of Justice is one of the principal departments of government in Kwara state of Nigeria. The Ministry is a service organ of Government that renders legal services to all Government ministries and inter-ministerial department, the performance of its sacrosanct duties. The ministry is made up of four (4) directorates, namely:
- Directorate of public prosecution
Responsible for rendering legal advices to law enforcement agency, government and its ministries, local government and parastatals. It also prosecutes all criminal cases.
- Directorate of Civil Litigation
Responsible for handling all civil cases and defending suits against the state government.
- Directorate of Legal Drafting
Responsible for drafting laws for the state government and by laws for the Local Government.
- Directorate of Personnel Finance and supplies
This directorate handles all personnel management, finance and supplies matters.
Achievements
The ministry of justice being a service ministry can be assessed with all the number of cases prosecuted or defended, legal advice proffered, and agreement or vetted and law/edicts drafted as the case may be since the inception of the administration of Dr. Bukola Saraki.
- The department of public prosecution rendered over one thousand, nine hundred (N1900) legal advices on the various criminal cases.
- Prison decongestion is still going on in various prisons in the state. About N20M was approved for the exercise by the state Government.
- Services of legal advice has been given to the present administration since its inception, council are attached to the various ministries and parastasals in order to easily get advice some of the suits at various stages of prosecution in various courts. 10 civil suits at the supreme court, 20 civil suits at the court of Appeal Ilorin, 150 civil suits at the various states and Federal High Court and 10 ternary matter at district court and one matter at the upper Area Court.
- Various documents of Government had been drafted and vetted since the inception of the present administration.
- Several bills had been drafted and contracts agreements have been prepared and fully vetted.
- The revised laws of Kwara state were published and public presentation of such laws was done on 27 May 2008. The activities marked the second term bid first year anniversary of His Excellency.
- About N2 million was approved in April 2008, for the Procurement of law books for the ministry of law library.
- In addition, the N1.5 million approved in March 2008 for upgrading, expanding and connecting to the internet.
- Centre for alternative dispute resolution was established where all civil matter would be settled.
