Responsibilities

  • To make attempt of reducing maternal mortality in the state.
  • To take care of the children and also the child’s right law.
  • To take care of issues affecting the women.
  • To also take care of the issue affecting the widows.
  • Assisting women with MOFEE micro credit loans.
  • To look into the plight of widows and Orphans in the state.
  • To finance gender equality.

Achievements

There are four departments in the ministry and they operate as follows:

  • Directorate of Personnel, Finance and Supply.
  • Directorate of Child.
  • Directorate of Women Affairs.
  • Directorate of Widowhood. 

Under Child Development, a lot of activities were carried out and they are as follows:

  • Advocacy visit to the sixteen local government areas on child labour education in the state and this was done in Dec. 2007.
  • Immunization of children of a day old to five years old was carried out throughout the state in conjunction with ministry of health.
  • Children Day Anniversary was marked on 27th may of every year and 2008 not exceptional.
  • The National Independent Day celebration and distribution of gifts to the less privileged homes i.e. motherless homes, Olokun Psychiatric home, school for the handicapped and children’s ward centre Igboro.
  • Deworming of school children was done and they were being provided with combatrine free of charge.  
  • Skill Acquisition Training and Purchase of equipment for 32 orphanage and vulnerable children (OVC) in the sixteen local government areas of the state.
  • New Year party for the children at government house.
  • Gifts to the first three babies of the year (maternity, civil service clinic and Ajikobi Maternity) all in Ilorin.
  • Sponsorship of two children to participate in the year 2007 international children’s camp in South Africa.
  • Sponsorship of children’s Parliament National Election.
  • A- 2Day sensitization workshop for Civil Based Organizations and young women of child bearing age on complementary feeding and to reduce to the barest minimum the rate of child deaths due to inadequate food and nutrition as indicated in the MDG’s.
  • A Crèche Centre created for the benefit of Female Civil Servants at the Ministry for the benefits of Nursing Mothers.
  • Launching of Orphanage and Vulnerable Children (OVC) of National Plan of Action (NPA) Steering Committee Meeting/ Training.
  • A Day workshop on awareness creation on the benefits of immunization within the context of Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) on 10th December, 2007.

Under the directorate of women, the activities carried out in the second term of first year of His Excellency, Dr. Bukola Saraki were as follows:   

  • The Ministry of Women Affairs visited Women Development Projects all over the sixteen local government areas in a bid to monitor the progress and made on the spot assessment of women development projects in the state.
  • The women were empowered with the effort at the grassroots and assisting them on their project and this was exemplified by two local governments namely: Ilorin East and South respectively who purchased vehicles for their women development units of their local government area to monitor projects and programmes of women.
  • State Government has assisted women during 2008 budgetary provision complemented effort of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs by assisting women with WOFEE Micro Credit Loans.
  • Kwara State Ministry of Women Affairs collaborated with Federal Ministry of Women Affairs in organizing Seminar on Way of Reducing Maternal Mortality in the State.
  • Training of Traditional Birth Attendances (TBAS) from Kwara State and it was coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.
  • The international Women Day is being celebrated every year and it was marked in kwara state and with pomp and pageantry this year 2008 Financing Gender Equality.
  • International Family Day.
