The Kwara State government has said that it is embarking on a large scale fishing farming aimed at empowering the womenfolk in the state.

Special Assistant to the state Governor on Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) Prince Tunji Moronfoye disclosed that while speaking to newsmen in Ilorin, the state capital.

Prince Moronfoye said that the project, which will be executed through the office of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of the state will take off by the first quarter of next year with arrangement with some foreign bodies for possibility of sponsorship.

According to him, the government is planning the MDGs women empowerment programme in the three senatorial districts of the state. This, he said, will be sponsored through Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative.

He said the MDGs malaria vector control awareness campaign will be carried out in all the 16 local government councils of the state.

This, he said is to sensitize people on the causes of malaria.

He said his office would also embark on MDGs enlightenment campaign by first quarter of next year.

Meanwhile, Special Assistant to Kwara state government on Youth Affairs, Mr. Ben Duntoye has described the intention of the state government to enroll new set of students at the Integrated Youth Farm Settlement, Malete next year as a course in right direction.

Governor Saraki had in his 2008 budget presentation to the House of Assembly recently disclosed that a new set off students would begin training on the farm following the graduation of 100 youth farmers this year.

Mr. Ben said that the move will encourage youths in the state to embrace farming and make kwara the food basket of the nation.

He said that Kwara is a leading state in revolutionary agriculture in Nigeria through its solid foundation for generations yet unborn.

“We are making history in Kwara State because we have a focused governor at the helm of affairs. Before Governor Saraki came on board, youths were not embracing farming, you only see old men going to the farm, but things have changed especially with the introduction of commercial farming in the state.

“Judging from the training of the first sets of youth farmers at Malete, the youths of this state are happy that another set of will be trained next year as disclosed by Governor Saraki in his budget”.

The SA challenged all the local governments in the state to take what is happening at the state level as an eye opener by also investing in agriculture and training of youth farmers for food security.

“What our amiable governor is doing is a big challenge to the 16 local government areas of the state. Let them begin commercial farming and train youth farmers as the state government is doing. By the time they do this, thousands of youth farmers would have been trained and Kwara will become the food basket of Africa”.
